China's National Day holiday falls on Oct 1 and ends on Oct 7 every year. For Chinese, the holiday is not only to celebrate the foundation of People's Republic of China, but also a shopping opportunity.
With this year's golden week just around the corner, most Chinese have already planned plenty of activities for the seven-day period.
Whether you choose staycation or decide to travel, prudently managing the finances is a must.
According to a survey conducted by Chutian Metropolis Daily in 2012, some people who stay at home spend as little as 170 yuan ($27.7) while others spend as much as 180,000 yuan. The money is mostly spent on transportation, shopping and buying gifts.
Although not a definite list, here's a look at eight activities that account for majority of expenditure during the national holidays.
No 6 Matchmaking
For those who do not have a girlfriend or a boyfriend, national holiday is a perfect time to have one. Some matchmaking agencies even organize large-scale activities during the holidays to offer opportunities to these adults.
The meetings usually happen with a dinner for two and the meal reportedly costs 100 yuan at least.

No 5 Family gatherings
National holiday is also a time for celebrations. Friends and families usually hold parties together to mark the event.
A newspaper in South China's Hunan province reported in 2013 that a dinner for three families can cost as much as 2,000 yuan during the holiday

No 4 Transportation charges
With the National Day holiday lasting seven days, many decide to visit friends or relatives living far away.
Wherever you go, spending money on transportation is necessary, apart from those who decide to stay at home. The amount can range from one yuan for public buses to thousands of yuan for plane tickets.

No 3 Traveling expenditure
With the long break and pleasant weather, many opt to travel during the golden week. However, the total expenditure can be hefty. Transportation cost, hotel expenses, tickets and other expenses can cost a lot.
Yunnan.cn reported in Oct, 2013, that a netizen who traveled to Hong Kong and Macao during the holidays spent almost 10,000 yuan.

No 2 Shopping
In order to attract more customers, retailers usually offer discounts during the national holidays. They not only put everyday items on sale, but nearly everything and anything that will help boost sales.
How much money a customer is willing to spend depends on several factors. Chutian Metropolis Daily reported that a netizen spent more than 20,000 yuan on shopping during the national holidays.

No 1 Home buying
Those looking to acquire real estate can take advantage of the holiday to inspect properties one by one. Real estate developers too promote properties during the holidays.
According to data released by China Index Academy in September, the average price of a newly-built home in China's 100 cities reached 10,771 yuan per square in August.
